No. 20 Chargers Drop Opener at 17th-ranked Illinois Central

Illinois Central came away victorious in a battle of ranked teams Thursday evening, defeating the Carl Sandburg College volleyball team 25-22, 25-19, 25-18 in the Chargers’ season opener.
Sandburg (0-1) came into the match No. 20 in the NJCAA Division II preseason rankings, while the host Cougars were ranked 17th.
Sophomore Peyton Bowman (Sciota, Ill./West Prairie), an All-America honorable mention last season, had a team-high 11 kills on 19 attacks to lead the Chargers. Bowman paced Sandburg with four solo blocks as well.
Mallory Flynn (Alexis, Ill./United) and Olivia Theleritis (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) each had three kills in their Sandburg debut, and Theleritis also had a pair of aces.
Sophomore setter Cora Vyhnanek (Colchester, Ill./West Prairie) had all 16 of the Chargers’ assists in the match.
UP NEXT
Sandburg is in Rockford this weekend for the McHenry County Invite, starting at 11 a.m. Friday against Des Moines Area. The Chargers also face Mott at 2:30 p.m. Friday. Saturday’s action has Sandburg taking on Vincennes at 1:30 p.m. and Madison at 5 p.m.
